A twice-imprisoned drug dealer from New Jersey admitted he sold the heroin that killed a user from Orange County, authorities said. Shameik "Homeboy" Byrd, age 31, who’s currently serving a state prison sentence, told a federal judge via videoconference in Newark that the death of 25-year-old Kean Cabral of Warwick was caused by heroin from the batch of “Trap Queen” that he’d been selling. State authorities tried to prosecute Byrd and a couple who they said bought the drugs from him and sold some to Cabral in April 2016. Overdoses Lead To Alert For Fentanyl-Laced Heroin In Area
A rash of overdoses has prompted the Ulster County District Attorney's office to issue a public safety warning about tainted heroin. "We are experiencing an unprecedented number of overdoses in the northern part of Ulster County, particularly in the town of Saugerties," the DA's office said. A man suffering from the effects of an overdose of heroin was busted with more than four ounces after Wallkill Police arrived on scene to help. The event took place Thursday, May 17 at the Middletown Motel, according to Wallkill Police Chief Robert Hertman. A man who overdosed on heroin and crashed his vehicle into a stand of trees in Orangeburg was saved by the use of Narcan. Keith Brady, 32, of New City was discovered around 5:15 a.m. Wednesday when Orangetown Police responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash at 94 Old Orangeburg Road, said Det. Sgt. The Ramapo Police Department reported this week that in January, officers were dispatched to numerous drug-related overdoses, including three instances where the individuals had become unconscious due to a heroin overdose.
