A New York county is training armed residents who could be deputized during emergencies and natural disasters. With the state's second-largest police force of 2,600 sworn officers, Nassau County posted a notice in March in local newspapers and other news outlets for a team of provisional emergency special deputy sheriffs "for the protection of human life and property during an emergency," said County Executive Bruce Blakeman in coordination with Nassau County Sheriff Anthony LaRocco. Massive Test Of Emergency Alert System Set For This Week: Here's When, What To Know Now

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) this week. Gov. Kathy Hochul visited the hardest-hit Hudson Valley county to survey damage after last week's winter storm left thousands of homes without power. Gov.. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday, March 6 updated New Yorkers on the status of storm recovery operations in the Hudson Valley as a second winter storm is being forecasted to impact New York. Last week's storm caused extensive damage to electric utility infrastructure, including hundreds of broken utility poles and damage in remote, hard-to-reach locations. Cuomo Declares State Of Emergency For Westchester
A state of emergency has been declared by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Sunday in four Hudson Valley counties: Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess and Sullivan. Responders in the four counties continue to recover from the Nor'easter that affected the entire state the past several days. Multiple Crashes Leave I-87 Traffic At Standstill In Orange
For those who have to brave the highways, Orange County Emergency Management officials are warning that I-87 is open, but due to multiple crashes, is at a standstill. The department reported around 4 p.m., Thursday that traffic is not moving between Exit 16 and Exit 17 (Harriman and Newburgh), and for motorists to use alternate roadways if possible. I-84 and Route 17 remain open and are passable, but conditions are treacherous, the department said.
