Isaias: CT Man Killed By Falling Tree During Height Of Storm
A man was killed by a falling tree during the height of Tropical Storm Isaias in Connecticut. The incident happened in New Haven County just after 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4 in Naugatuck. The 66-year-old man had exited his vehicle and attempted to move branches from the roadway in the area of Andrew Mountain Road and Red Maple Court, Naugatuck Police said. While moving the branches, a tree fell, striking the man. The injuries were fatal, police said. The time frame for Isaias' strongest impact in this area during the afternoon and into the evening on Tuesday, Aug. 4. As a strong storm system marked by rain and wind hits the East Coast, there will be a new threat for wintry weather in parts of the region. Light rain and drizzle will continue through the evening on Monday, Nov. 18. The overnight low will stay just above freezing in lower Westchester along with Rockland and Fairfield counties as well as Long Island, meaning there will be no wintry mix there. A storm in the central United States is taking aim on the East Coast and could bring rain, a wintry mix, and even some snow late this week. "The strength and location of the high pressure delivering cold to the northern tier of the country will determine how far north the storm is able to go," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alan Reppert. Nestor, a tropical storm that has moved to the East Coast, is expected to bring precipitation to the area on Sunday, Oct. 20. The heaviest rain from the system will be south of New York City, where locally heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms are expected. (See image above.) Gas Prices On Rise In New York, Connecticut
Temperatures continue to rise, as do prices at the pump for motorists on the East Coast. Nationally, gas prices have risen to an average of $2.79 per gallon, up 11 cents from a month ago, and up four cents from just a week ago. In New York, motorists are paying an average of $2.90, with some of the highest prices in Westchester ($3.11 per gallon); Putnam ($2.99); Dutchess ($2.93) and Orange County ($2.83). Flesh-Eating Bacteria Could Spread To East Coast Beaches As Oceans Warm, New Report Says
Flesh-eating bacteria that live in the ocean could be spreading to East Coast beaches due to climate change, according to a new report. Vibrio vulnificus, which is typically found in warmer waters above 55 degrees, such as those in the Gulf of Mexico, has been making its way up the coast as ocean waters continue to warm up, the report’s authors found.
