James Watters, 22, was arrested after police responded to the bar after receiving a call from the victim that her purse had been stolen, police said.

When officers arrived, the woman told them she had left her purse on a table unattended and someone had stolen it while she was gone, police said.

An investigation led to Watters, who had attempted to hide a cellphone he had taken out of the purse in the tank of a toilet in a bathroom, according to police.

While being arrested, police also allegedly discovered that Watters was in possession of marijuana. He was charged with criminal mischief, petty larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of marijuana.

He is being held at the Rockland County Jail.
