Orangetown Police: DWI Pearl River Driver Topples Street Sign

PEARL RIVER, N.J. -- A Pearl River man was drunk when his car careened off the road and smashed into a street sign Sunday night, Orangetown police said.

No injuries were reported.

Thomas Knoesel, 50, was released pending a Jan. 4 court hearing on DWI charges, Sgt. Kirk Vega said Monday.

Officers smelled alcohol on Knoesel's breath following the 8:30 p.m. crash on Washington Avenue crash, Vega said.

He also had "glassy eyes, slurred speech and poor motor control," the sergeant said.

Knoessel consented to and then failed several field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, Vega said.

He refused to submit to a breath test there, the sergeant said.
