Man Charged With Driving At 3 Times Legal Limit After Pearl River Crash

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. --  A Garnerville man was charged with driving drunk at three times the legal limit following a crash Saturday in Pearl River, according to the Orangetown Police.

Matthew Smahaj, 25, was charged after officers responded to a vehicle crash on North Middletown Road in Pearl River and while speaking with Smahaj they could smell alcohol and his speech was slurred, police said.

Officers conducted several field sobriety tests, which Smahaj failed, and a breathalyzer which showed Smahaj's blood alcohol content at more than the times the legal limit, police added. 

He was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated and driving while intoxicated and was released on bail. 

Smahaj is scheduled to appear in court on April 4.
