Man Caught With Loaded Gun, Pot In Stop On PIP In Orangetown

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. - A routine stop by state police on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Rockland County led to drugs and weapons charges for a driver in possession of a loaded semi-automatic handgun.

New York State Police troopers conducted a traffic stop on 37-year-old Bronx resident Alfonso Cortez in Orangetown on Tuesday night after he was spotted committing vehicle and traffic law violations on the parkway.

During the subsequent stop, police said that it was determined Cortez was in possession of marijuana, and a search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of an illegally possessed, loaded, Smith and Wesson 9mm semi-automatic handgun, three magazines and numerous rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Cortez was also allegedly in possession of heroin. He was arrested in Orangetown and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a controlled substance. He is currently awaiting arraignment in the Town of Orangetown Court.
