Officers from the Orangetown Police Department received a call shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7 from a motorist traveling on Orangeburg Road who spotted a black Ford Escape SUV driving erratically along the roadway.
Police said that officers were able to locate the vehicle and stopped the driver, Orangeburg resident John Kennedy, for erratic driving, a vehicle and traffic law violation.
During the subsequent stop, officers reported that there was an odor of alcohol on Kennedy’s breath and he was unsteady on his feet when prompted to exit the SUV. After failing several Standardized Field Sobriety tests, he was arrested and proceeded to refuse to submit to a breathalyzer test.
Kennedy was arrested and charged with a felony count of driving while intoxicated, with police noting that the charge was a felony due to a previous DWI conviction within the past 10 years. Kennedy was released and is due back in Orangetown Court on Sept. 27 to answer the charge.
