Investigators from the Orangetown Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Orangeburg Road and Lester Drive shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, where there were reports of the crash.

Police said that it is alleged that Steven Gilheany was operating his vehicle and struck the rear of the vehicle in front of him on the roadway, which led to a chain reaction involving two more vehicles in front of Gilheany.

According to police, it is further alleged that Gilheany was operating his vehicle in an intoxicated state and later failed a breathalyzer test at Orangetown Police Headquarters. He was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated.

Gilheany was released on his own recognizance and is due back in Orangetown Justice Court on Nov. 22 to answer the charge.
