Lennon, who was among the first to respond to the Brink's Robbery on Oct. 20, 1981, died Tuesday, according to a statement from Clarkstown police.
"The Clarkstown Police Department mourns the loss of retired Nyack Police Officer Brian Lennon, who passed away yesterday," the department said. "He was a great man and great police officer. May he rest in peace."
The details of the robbery are widely known across Rockland County and the rest of the region.
Carried out my members of the Black Liberation Army and the Weather Underground, the robbery began at the Nanuet Mall, where Brink's guard Peter Paige was shot and killed.
The robbers then fled, ultimately ending up near the entrance to the New York State Thruway at Route 59 and Mountain View Road in Nyack. There, Nyack police officers Edward O'Grady and Waverly Brown were both shot and killed.
Lennon was inside a police car at the scene when the Nyack shootings began, according to lohud.com, which reported that Lennon was unable to get out of the car, but emptied his shotgun and pistol.
Calling hours are scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home, 100 Franklin Ave., Pearl River. A burial Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Nanuet.
