O&R Issues Warning About Bill Paying Scheme

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Utility customers in Rockland County are being warned by O&R that the company has been receiving reports of crooks running a bill-paying scheme in order to defraud consumers, according to the utility company.

O&R are warning Rockland County residents that customers having been receiving calls from scammers demanding payment of their utility bills or their service will be cut off.

During the calls, imposters pose as utility company representatives and demand immediate payment for what the thieves fraudulently claim are delinquent electric and gas bills.

The scammers go on to say that the customer's service will be disconnected if they do not make an immediate payment using a prepaid debit card or even a credit card.

These callers are not from O&R, and O&R does not accept payments of electric or gas bills by pre-paid debit cards, or by MoneyGram or similar transfers. 

The company urges anyone who is contacted in this fashion to break off contact with the crooks and call O&R Customer Service at 1-877-434-4100. If they feel they have been the victim of one of the scammers, residents should contact their local police department.
