Using health care data from a variety of sources, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The Leapfrog Group assigns grades twice per year to 2,500 hospitals across the country.

The grade is meant to show how well the hospital keeps patients safe from preventable problems and medical error. To learn more about the grade, visit the website.

Nyack Hospital officials noted that only about 18 percent of New York hospitals measured received an "A" grade.

"Patient safety is number one at Nyack Hospital and our team has done an excellent job in implementing processes to ensure that our patients are not only safe, but provided with a comfortable environment that promotes healing and well being," said Dr. Mark Geller, hospital president and chief executive officer.

The hospital also participates with the New York State Partnership for Patients, a national initiative of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to advance the goals of better health, better care and lower costs, hospital officials said.

The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by The Leapfrog Group, a national, independent nonprofit. The Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D, or F grade.

It is the first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, hospital officials said, and is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.

Nyack Hospital is a 375-bed community acute care medical and surgical hospital, founded in 1895 in Rockland County. It is affiliated with Montefiore Health System. To learn more, visit the hospital's website.
