Chief William Barbera said the Sheriff's Office received the call about 3 p.m. that a small aircraft was in distress and had gone down. The department's marine unit, along with emergency boats from the Stony Point and Haverstraw fire departments searched the area, but did not find any plane or debris, he said.

"At this point, we don't know if it was a hoax, and we didn't receive any other calls," Barbera said. "We still performed an extensive search and didn't turn up anything."

Rockland County Executive Ed Day noted that "no additional reports have been received about an aircraft in distress."

Day said that emergency responders would continue to monitor the situation.
