More than area luminaries read during the marathon event, including State Senator David Carlucci, Nyack Mayor Jen Laird White, author Mark Dery and actor Bill Irwin.

Selections from books were from "Native Son," "The Satanic Verses," "Lady Chatterley's Lover," and "The Color Purple," to name a few.

Banned Books Week was launched by the American Library Association in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries.
