"It has very recently come to our attention that a private company is offering to match owners of residential swimming pools with people who want to rent the pools, often by the hour," Day said.
Day said the practice is illegal under the county's Sanitary Code: "It is dangerous and exposes both the homeowner and the people using the swimming pool to unacceptable risks."
In order to rent out their pool for use by the public, a homeowner has to obtain a special permit from the County Health Department, Day said.
The Rockland County Department of Health will shut down and levy fines against any homeowner who engages in this practice, he added.
That includes if you don't charge strangers for using your pool.
Day said the county recently became aware of an online business that advertises pools for rent, many of them in Rockland County.
"We are reaching out to this company to inform them that they must cease this practice. We will take legal action if necessary," Day said.
