Two out-of-town women in their 20s left the trial and found themselves disoriented when they called on their cell phones for help around 1 p.m. Monday.
Fire Chief Vincent Reid said, "They couldn't go up and they couldn't go down; they were petrified because they felt trapped."
Seven member of Nyack Fire Department's High Angle Rescue Team wrangled the hikers into ropes one at a time up the 225-foot high cliff and ferried them back to safety.
There were no injuries.
Reid said hikers need to stay on the trails. "Don't bite off more than you can chew," he warned hikers.
The New York State Park Police assisted at the scene Monday. The park police are responsible for Hook Mountain State Park, which is part of the Palisades Interstate Park system.
They said the three hikers — a 22-year-old from Irvington, a 22-year-old from Queens and a 21-year-old from Germantown — were issued tickets for going off an established trail.
