White Cane Awareness Day is a national observance to educate the world about blindness and how the blind and visually impaired can live and work independently while giving back to their communities, to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by blind people in a sighted world and to honor the many contributions being made by the blind and visually impaired.
Held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Hennessy Center at Dominican College, 470 Western Highway, Orangeburg, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in demonstrations wearing simulation glasses and hear personal stories of achievements from visually impaired and blind individuals.
Guest speakers include Brian Daniels, assistant commissioner of the state Commission for the Blind and Sister Kathleen Sullivan, chancellor of Dominican College.
The association provides comprehensive vision rehabilitation, mobility instruction, employment placement, and social work services to visually impaired children and adults.
