Why not change your tradition-- or revive an old one -- and cut down your own this year?
Yes, it requires a bit of a drive -- there aren't any tree farms in Rockland County -- but it's not that far to travel for great memories, tree selfies and the fun of cutting, carting and chopping.
Just bundle up before you go and check websites for hours. Here's a sampling of area options:
Farmside Acres (280 Angola Rd., Cornwall, 845-534-8362): Cut your own Douglas Fir, Scotch Pine, and Blue Spruce, then enjoy complimentary candy canes, cider, and donuts. Opens the first weekend in December.
Pine View Farm (575 Jackson Ave.,New Windsor, 845-564-4111). This family-run farm has a limited supply this year, with trees available only Saturday, Dec. 19 and Sunday Dec. 20 between 9 a a.m. and 4 p.m.
Wilkens Fruit and Fir Farm (1335 White Hill Rd, Yorktown Heights, 914-245-5111): Free hot apple cider is available pre or post-tree selection. The farm opens Saturday, Nov. 29 and features Douglas and Fraser Firs for "Choose-n-Cut" along with pre-cut Frasers.
Hardwick Tree Farm (213 Wood Street, Mahopac, 845-528-5814): Opens the Saturday after Thanksgiving and remains open weekends until Christmas. Expect a wide variety of trees including Douglas Fir, Frasier Fir, Balsam Fir, Concolor and Canaan at $13 per foot.
Emmerich Tree Farm (101 Sleepy Valley Rd., Warwick, 845-986-0151): Choose and cut spruce, pine, and fir situated on a beautiful south-facing hillside. Wagon rides to the field, music, bonfire, and free hot chocolate.
Manza Family Farm ( 30 NY-211, Montgomery, 845-692-4364): Offers a limited availability of cut-your-own Canaan Firs, though there are plenty of pre-cut trees. In addition, you'll find pony rides, farm animals and live reindeer as well as Santa and his elves on weekends.
