To help bring awareness to the issue, and to offer a little fun time, the Rockland Council on Alcoholism & Other Drug Dependence Inc., a non-profit organization providing substance abuse prevention and recovery services, will hold it annual 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, Sept. 10.
This year’s theme, "Strengthening Families and Communities!," is part of the national public awareness campaign set for the month of September.
The fun gets underway at 8 a.m. at Rockland Lake State Park with the run/walk and continues from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a kids fun run, music, food, speakers, activities, raffles and more!.
The focus of the event is to help educate and support people affected by substance abuse disorders, educate the public that addiction is a treatable disease, and celebrate the lives of those who have gained and sustained recovery.
“The importance of the Rockland Recovery Rally is to celebrate individuals and families in recovery. The Rally raises public awareness that prevention, treatment, and recovery services can transform lives. Events like these help to reduce the stigma associated with addiction and provide hope and support to those still suffering," Kathleen Katt-Bennie, rally coordinator said.
During the event, Rockland residents who have lost their battle with addiction will be remembered, she added.
"We must join together as a community to support recovery for individuals, friends, and families of Rockland County," she added.
