That's why two years ago she opened My Own Little Gallery at 142 Main St. in Nyack inside the store she has owned for more than 35 years, the locally famous My Own Little Corner Antiques shop.
Schloss, an artist and actress, has always been in love with the drama of color and line and uses these to masterfully create powerful semi-abstract nudes. So she thought, why not bring a little color to the area with a gallery within a shop that would also provide other artists with a place to show their pieces.
"I love that moment when everything just clicks when you are painting a nude and you and your model become one and you go to that 'happy' place of emotion and art," Scholoss said with a laugh.
To help bring that joy to others, she will hold an open house to kick-off her second gallery showing from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, entitled "Big and Small in Blazing Colors."
“The title of the exhibit springs from the fact that the works range from small to major pieces, allowing even casual visitors to take home a beautiful, original piece of art at an affordable price,” says Schloss. “And, of course it’s fall—the perfect season for brilliant colors!”
The show will include several of her newest paintings from her foray into landscape and still life as a result of her recent residency at the Art Students League in Sparkill,, to which she won a scholarship. In addition, the show will feature several other local artists including:
- Sue Barrasi: Barrasi’s landscapes, portraits, and stills have hung in museums and galleries across the country. Barrasi’s pallete is bright and fearless, with bold brushstrokes and a playful palette that really make a canvas sing: "I love to study how the Sun dances upon nature,” she says.
- Alicia Chimento: Chimento says her work is all about color: "I love it when my paintings and designs can reflect the colors and textures of the things I see in the natural world, especially the elements of the sea and sky and the organic shapes of garden and earth. Whether the brushes in my hand are applied to canvas, panel, paper, furniture, walls or digital media, the magic that color generates always energizes my work.”
- Michele Paradiso: Paradiso’s gentle works in acrylics and watercolor shimmer, with a fusion of representational and impressionistic styles. Both ethereal and evocative, they bear witness to her mastery in re-creating the natural world on her canvases.
A visit to gallery also includes an opportunity to browse the antique store attached that features a fascinating and eclectic mix of small collectibles, vintage jewelry and toys games and dolls.
"In both the shop and gallery I have things that are priced so people can afford to purchase and own beautiful things," she said. "There is something in every price range and something for every taste."
