The crash happened in Hillcrest on W. Eckerson Road on Thursday, March 20 around 12:30 p.m., the Ramapo Police Department announced on Saturday, March 22.
Officers responded to the area after receiving a call from the Spring Valley Police Department asking for a welfare check on a driver, police said. When police arrived, they saw the vehicle driving into oncoming traffic before it hit a curb and then crashed into a house, police said.
The driver, a 61-year-old man from Monroe, showed "clear signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, impaired motor function, and an odor of alcohol," police said. His name has not yet been made public.
Police said they also found several open containers of alcohol inside the car.
Further investigation revealed the man had a prior DWI conviction within the last 10 years, police said. He was arrested and charged with felony DWI.
No one inside the home was injured during the crash, according to police.
