New Update: Chances Increase System In Tropics Could Become Tropical Storm

There is an increasing chance that a system now being monitored could develop into a tropical storm just as the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season enters its final month.

"A broad area of low pressure will likely develop over the southwestern Caribbean Sea in a few days," the National Hurricane Center said in a statement on Sunday morning, Oct. 27. "Some gradual development is possible toward the end of the week and over the weekend when the system begins to drift northward or northeastward over the southwestern and south-central Caribbean Sea."

Water temperatures remain warm in the area where development is expected, which will further boost chances of formation.

"I know there will be showers and thunderstorms in this zone this week," AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said. "The question is the wind shear. If there is low wind shear, which we expect, I think we will be getting a tropical depression or storm to form."

The hurricane season runs through Saturday, Nov. 30.

Patty and Rafael are next on the list of storm names.
