Racing At 130 MPH On LIE Lands Oyster Bay Man Charges: Suffolk County Police A Long Island driver was caught racing at 130 mph on the Long Island Expressway in Ronkonkoma, Suffolk County police announced on Saturday, March 8. Lelis Zavala, 23, of Oyster Bay, was cited for an illegal speed contest and reckless driving after officers from the Street Takeover Task Force spotted his 2018 Toyota Corolla racing another vehicle near Exit 59 around midnight, according to police. Zavala was slapped with eight additional vehicle and traffic infractions. His car was impounded, and he is set to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on March 28.

Reward Offered 2 Years After 'Loving' Father Killed In Hit-Run Crash On Long Island Expressway Two years after a beloved husband and father was killed in a hit-and-run crash on the Long Island Expressway, police are no closer to catching his killer. Robert Twiford, age 61, of Melville, died Dec. 5, 2022, after being struck on the off-ramp of eastbound I-495 at exit 60 in Ronkonkoma. Suffolk County Police said Twiford was lying in the roadway at around 8 p.m when he was struck by at least one vehicle, which fled the scene. The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 30, at approximately 1:20 p.m. in Manorville.
