Human Remains Found By Couple Walking On Fire Island, Police Say
A man and woman walking along a beach on Fire Island stumbled upon human remains Monday, Dec. 23, police announced. The couple was along the beach around 4:55 p.m. when they found what appeared to be a human jawbone on Smith Point County Park Beach in Shirley, Suffolk County police said. They promptly brought the remains to a park attendant working at the site, police said. The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office later confirmed that the remains are human. Two men have been apprehended on charges in connection with a chaotic street takeover on Long Island in which a police officer was assaulted and dragged by a vehicle, officials said. The incident occurred early Sunday, Nov. 3, in Islip. Jail Guard Accused Of Sexually Assaulting Inmate On Long Island Indicted By Grand Jury
A corrections officer at a Long Island jail will stand trial for allegedly sexually assaulting an inmate. Jason Middleton, age 35, of Central Islip, was indicted by a Suffolk County grand jury on Friday, Oct. 11, stemming from an alleged incident at the county jail in Riverhead. Investigators are hoping newly released images will lead to the identification of another victim in the Gilgo Beach serial murders. On Long Island, the Gilgo Beach Task Force distributed facial reconstructions of who they've long referred to as "Asian Doe" during a press conference in Brentwood on Monday morning, Sept. 16. Police are investigating the death of a man who was pulled unresponsive from water on Long Island. A Suffolk County Park Ranger was patrolling on Outer Beach in Smith Point County Park when he was notified that a man was in distress in the water at noontime Sunday, Aug. 11. The officer and a good Samaritan immediately attempted to reach the man using a life ring, but he was located unresponsive by Suffolk County lifeguards on jet skis. Police Seize 1,500 Fireworks from Long Island Shipping Warehouse
Police on Long Island seized more than 1,500 fireworks from a shipping facility on Long Island. The incident occurred in Bay Shore on Monday, June 17. Suffolk County Police said the Third Precinct received a tip regarding the fireworks. Crime Section officers responded to the warehouse, the location of which is not being released due to an ongoing investigation, and found a shipment of illegal fireworks to be shipped to a business in Suffolk County later, the department said.
