Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Storms With Downpours, Gusty Winds, Lightning Moving Through Area With an increase in the chance for storms Friday afternoon and evening, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for the area. The watch, issued at 3:40 p.m. by the National Weather Service, is in effect until 11 p.m. Friday. Among the counties covered by the watch are Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange and Fairfield. Isolated storms began to develop in the area in the mid-afternoon and are now moving eastward. (See radar image above.) Here Comes The Rain: Weekend Will See Stormy Start The weekend will get off to a wet start Friday as a storm system arriving late in the morning will bring rain and possibly a thunderstorm. The storm chance starts after 10 a.m. Friday on a day in which the high temperature will be in the mid-50s, according to the National Weather Service.
