This story has been updated. A pilot came out unscathed after being forced to make an emergency landing at a high school in Westchester County following a mechanical issue. The landing happened Tuesday afternoon, May 26, at Rye Neck High School on Hornidge Road in Mamaroneck, when the aircraft landed on one of the school's athletic fields, according to Rye Neck Union Free School District Superintendent Michael Burke and City of Rye Police. A 69-year-old man from the Hudson Valley was injured in an explosion inside a school district maintenance building in Westchester that also caused a small fire. A half dozen school districts in the region will receive over $12 million in federal funding to pay for electric school buses. In Ulster County, the Marlboro Board of Education announced that it has appointed Michael Rydell as the district’s new superintendent of schools. There has been a new positive COVID-19 case in a Westchester school district. Someone at the William E. Cottle Elementary School in Tuckahoe has tested positive for the virus, Superintendent Amy Goodman wrote in a note to parents. It was not disclosed whether it was a student or staff member who tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday, Sept. 11. Support and words of comfort are pouring in for the family of the 11-year-old Newburgh girl killed during Tuesday's storm when a tree fell on the SUV in which she was a passenger.
