Vandal Targeted Black Victim's Car In Saratoga County Hate Crime, Police Say
A 20-year-old Saratoga County man is facing felony hate crime charges after allegedly vandalizing a victim’s car, police said.
Deputies responded to a disturbance call on Blue Heron Way in the town of Ballston just before 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators determined that Christopher Brothers, 20, of Ballston Spa, struck the victim’s car with a hammer and jumped on top of it, causing over $1,500 in damage, police said.
Deputies alleged he intentionally targeted the victim, who is Black, because of his perceived race.

A man accused of attacking and choking a Hispanic victim while in line at a Westchester gas station has been released on his own recognizance following his arraignment on hate crime charges, prosecutors announced.
Carl Jones of Spartanburg, South Carolina, 57, was arraigned Sunday, Aug. 10, in Mamaroneck Village Court on one count of third-degree assault as a hate crime, a felony, and one count of criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, a misdemeanor, the Westchester County District Attorney's Office announced on Thursday, Aug. 14.

A man who fired a shotgun outside an Albany synagogue on the first night of Hanukkah in 2023 has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.
Mufid Fawaz Alkhader, 29, of Schenectady, pleaded guilty in February to a federal hate crime for the Dec. 7, 2023, incident at Temple Israel, as Daily Voice previously reported.
Alkhader took an Uber to the synagogue, walked up the front steps, pulled a shotgun from a duffel bag, and fired two rounds into the air while shouting “Free Palestine.” Adults and children were inside at the time, but no one was injured.

Hudson Valley Man Caught Spray Painting American/Israeli Flag, Police Say
A Hudson Valley man was caught in the act of allegedly defacing a joint American/Israeli flag with spray paint, police said.
The incident occurred in Rockland County around 4:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3, in the Monsey area of Ramapo.
According to Lt. Chris Franklin of the Ramapo Police, a patrol officer spotted the man wearing a face mask while walking on Main Street in Monsey.

The man accused of opening fire at a New York synagogue on the first day of Hanukkah has been federally charged.
Mufid Fawaz Alkhader, age 28, of Schenectady, appeared in Albany federal court on Friday, Dec. 8, where he was arraigned on one count of unlawfully possessing a firearm.
According to the criminal complaint, Alkhader approached Albany’s Temple Israel, located on New Scotland Avenue, at around 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7 armed with a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun.
He then fired the weapon twice into the air, prosecutors allege.

A Westchester man has pleaded guilty to committing a violent hate crime against a 67-year-old Asian woman who was entering her home.
District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced that Yonkers resident Tammel Esco, age 42, pleaded guilty on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022, to committing a violent hate crime on Friday, March 11 against the woman who was entering her apartment building.
