Yellen, the college’s fourth president, announced his resignation on Wednesday, June 19, and the college’s Board of Trustees named President Emeritus and Professor of Public Policy Dennis Murray as interim president.

Yellen took over for Murray at Marist on July 1, 2016, and was “pivotal in guiding the College in bold new directions,” the Board of Trustees stated. At the time he stepped down, Murray was one of the longest-serving college or university presidents in the country after 37 years in the position in Marist.

In announcing Yellen’s resignation, Marist highlighted several of the president’s accomplishments during his three-year tenure.

“Under Yellen’s leadership, the College made great strides, including the development of a five-year strategic plan; announcing plans to start a new medical school; opening a location in midtown Manhattan; and launching its first-ever doctoral degree, the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program.”

Before coming to Marist, Yellen was a dean and professor of law at the Loyola University Chicago School for 11 years. Following a sabbatical, Yellen is expected to pursue other leadership positions in higher education.

“I am very proud of the many things that were accomplished during my time at Marist,” Yellen stated. "I am sorry that I will not be here to see these things come to fruition, as I am sure they will, but I am extremely grateful for this experience and for the wonderful support I received from many at Marist.”

“We wish David and Leslie the best as they embark on this new chapter in their lives,” Ross Mauri, the Chair of the Board of Trustees said.

Mauri said that in the coming months, the Board of Trustees will begin consulting with faculty, students and alumni to begin the process of overseeing a nationwide search for a permanent new president. Mauri noted that Murray will be very involved in overseeing the college in the interim.

“Dr. Murray will provide important continuity of leadership for the College in this interim position as we embark on the search for a new president,” he said. “This will ensure that Marist continues to serve its students thoughtfully, diligently, and with unwavering dedication.”
