Engine 2 was driving on Corlies Avenue just before 4 p.m. Friday after clearing an EMS call on Mansion Street and headed back to quarters when firefighters noticed an odor of smoke and a haze in the area, the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department NY Local 596 reports. The crew then investigated, and just before pulling onto Lexington Avenue, City 911 began to dispatch a three-story structure fire at 12 Lexington.
The mother and son were airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with burn and trauma injuries, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. There has been no update on the extent of the injuries. Two other were treated for smoke inhalation and released.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Crews operated in temperatures just shy of 100 degrees for nearly four hours, and all units were clear of the scene by 7:45 p.m.
