Firefighters arrived at a home on Crescent Drive after 7 p.m. to smoke coming from a home on the block. Anticipating there may be a possibly handicapped person in the home, firefighters entered to find a fire in the kitchen later ruled as electrical and accidental, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.
First aid was administered to many felines on the scene who were moved to safety in conjunction with Mid-Hudson Animal Aid Center, the report said. Seven cats died on the scene.
Two firefighters were injured removing the cats and were treated at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.
