State police troopers stopped Matthew Bauer, 32, and his passenger, 29-year-old Kayla Goncalez, both Beacon residents, shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Monday morning after committing a traffic violation on I-87 in New Paltz.
Police said that during the subsequent stop, the Bauer gave probable cause to search the vehicle, and during that search, it was determined that both occupants of the vehicle were in possession of the drugs.
Bauer was charged with a felony count of fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanors. He was also cited for a vehicle and traffic violation. Goncalez was charged with three misdemeanor counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Following arraignment in the Town of Platekill Court, both Bauer and Goncalez were remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of cash bail or bond. Each is due in the Town of New Paltz Court later this week to answer the charges.
