Poughkeepsie Hearing Discusses Crackdown On Aggressive Panhandling

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Poughkeepsie may be weighing ways to curb panhandling, but, says Mayor Rob Rolison, merely passing a law won’t get to the root cause of the sometimes intimidating behavior, according to a report by Time Warner Cable News.

The Common Council is holding a public hearing on a proposed law dealing with aggressive panhandling at 6 p.m. Monday, April 18, at City Hall, 62 Civic Center Plaza.

Rolison told Time Warner Cable News that an increased police presence has already cut down on aggressive panhandling.

He added that the city cannot hold people accountable for begging on the street if it’s not going to address mental health issues that may be the cause in some cases, the Time Warner Cable News story said.

Homeless folks have been a problem for a long time, one hotel manager told Time Warner Cable News, saying that beyond approaching guests for money, some have actually sneaked inside the hotel to catch catnaps on its landings.
