Taking place in Dutchess, Orange and Sullivan counties on Feb. 19 and 20, the State Winter Games will feature more than 1,000 athletes and coaches from across the state who will part in competitions including competitions in Alpine Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Figure Skating, Floor Hockey and Snowshoe.
The State Winter Games are one of three annual state games and one of more than 4,000 total competitive experiences held each year throughout New York. All events are free and open to the public.
Opening ceremonies take place Friday, Feb. 19 and will feature the Parade of Athletes, entertainment and the lighting of the Special Olympics Cauldron.
Athletic competition begins Saturday, Feb. 20 starting around 8 a.m. in five Olympic-style sports.
The games end with a bang on Feb. 21 with the annual Fishkill Polar Plunge fundraiser at the Sharpe Reservation.
In addition to the welcome and games, the team sent out an announcement that all service volunteer positions are currently full. But they still have numerous opportunities for residents to make a difference by serving as Social Volunteers -- better known as the "Fans in the Stands."
Athletes come to the State level Winter Games from all across New York State. Many families cannot make the trip for the day, so the games need the community to be at the competitions to watch, cheer and help build the excitement for the athletes.
