Charles Fells, who runs The Artist's Palate and Brassiere 292 in Poughkeepsie, hired Roderick Boney, a Houston resident, to work as a sous chef at Artist's Palate. Boney and his wife Stacey, son Kayden and pet kitten, are also staying with Fells at his home in Hyde Park after Boney's home was hard hit by the hurricane.
Fells saw a job posting on Indeed from the Texas Restauranteur's Association about Boney's plight. Since they arrived, Fells said his daughter, Olivia, has enjoyed playing mommy to Kayden.
"I wanted to do something to help," Fells said. "I didn't want to just give money. They have been great houseguests."
Fells said there have been adjustments on both sides, as he gets used to having another family in his house and the Boney family adjusts to life in Dutchess County.
"I'm sure it's been a little bit difficult for them," Fells said.
While working at The Artist's Palate, a French restaurant, Boney has also had to learn a different cuisine, being used to cooking a Louisiana Texas style. Fells said.
At the two restaurants, Fells has been collecting donations for the family.
"It's been rewarding and humbling to know what they've gone through," Fells said.
