The event ask residents to get outside and enjoy one of the many great trails the area has to offer including the award-winning Dutchess Rail Trail and Harlem Valley Rail Trail.
The William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail is a 13.4 mile multi-use county park that runs through the middle of the county along the former Maybrook Rail corridor including the towns of Poughkeepsie, LaGrange, Wappinger and East Fishkill, with a direct link to the Walkway Over the Hudson and the regional trail network.
Named “Best Hiking Trail in the Hudson Valley” by Hudson Valley magazine in 2015, the trail is a favorite with residents.
The Harlem Valley Rail Trail consists of two sections totaling 15 paved miles through stunning rural Dutchess and Columbia county landscapes. Since the mid-1980's, the Harlem Valley Rail Trail Association has dreamed of a 46-mile rail trail in the Harlem Valley and Taconic Hills of eastern New York. The first segment of the trail opened in 1996.
Since then, the trail has grown in 1997, 2000, and 2005. Another 13 miles of abandoned rail bed are in different development stages, and most of another 18 miles have been acquired to take the Trail north into the village of Chatham.
In addition to having a great time outdoors, residents who take part in "Opening Day for Trails" can "take the pledge" for a chance to win a new bicycle.
