Historical Society Fundraiser Gives Nod To Beacon Hat Past
BEACON, N.Y. -- A fundraiser on Saturday paid homage to Beacon's hat past. The city is second only to Danbury, Conn., in its relevance as a hat making capital in the region, said Mary Colbert, vice president of the Beacon Historical Society. The society's fundraiser this past weekend featured the auctioning of 40 hats local artists created, to pay homage to the history. 'Hats Off' Event To Benefit Beacon Historical Society
BEACON, N.Y. -- Beacon residents will doff their headgear, both figuratively and literally, this weekend to an important bit of the city’s history – hat making. The local historical society, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, will hold a silent auction from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, of 50 wooden “hats” depicting Beacons past and present. It was quite the spooky day in the Hudson Valley Monday as Halloween saw the streets filled with ghosts, vampires, monsters and demons. Helping to keep the peace in Elmsford was Batman, who showed up at the school's Halloween Parade looking suspiciously like Superintendent Joseph Ricca. The superintendent promised students from Alice E. Grady Elementary School and the Carl L. Dozens Volunteer On Poughkeepsie Agency's 'Make A Difference Day'
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- More than 100 volunteers recently took part in the annual “Make A Difference Day” event organized by United Way of Dutchess-Orange Region, the Poughkeepsie-based organization said. The intrepid volunteers worked on eight community projects, contributing a total of 730 hours and making an estimated economic impact of $19,607, United Way said. The benefits of helping out local nonprofit groups goes both ways. Five Hudson Valley Walks To End Alzheimer's Expect To Raise More Than $1M
The Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter held five walks around its seven-county region over the past few weeks, starting with the Westchester Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sept. 25 at White Plains High School and ending with the Putnam walk on Oct. 16 at the Putnam Office for Senior Resources in Carmel. Indian Point Security Drill Will Include Simulated Gunfire, Attacks
BUCHANAN, N.Y. -- Residents shouldn't worry if they hear gunfire today coming from the Indian Point Energy Center on Tuesday -- the power plant will be holding security training drills. The training will take place during the day and into the evening hours on Tuesday, and again on Thursday, Oct. 13, plant officials said.
