POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- When Beth Madsen, the owner of Elizabeth Boutique in Poughkeepsie tells a client she should try something on for size, women often jump right on the bandwagon.

That's because Madsen, who grew up in Clinton Corners, says she knows what her clients want--- and what looks good.

Accessories remain a crowd favorite but women will also find anchor brands like Nic & Zoe, Sanctuary, Comfy, and Nallie & Milly. "The most important thing is that we bring brands in that work for the Hudson Valley woman. She works, lives and plays here," said Madsen.

To that end, the sporty/athletic look continues to be strong. "Customers are choosing comfort over anything else," she said. "It just works with today's casual styling. Leggings are always a hit and slip on sneakers are popular. If it feels good, customers will buy it."

Madsen has had her boutique since August 2008. Originally, she was going to open in Beacon, but had a change of heart. "I decided to open in Poughkeepsie. I was born here and raised here; I went to school in Millbrook. My father has owned a business in Arlington for over 40 years. It just made sense," she said.

As for what makes her store special, she said it's the relationships she works to build with her customers. She also credits her store's layout and design. "It’s one of my favorite parts of my job," she said. "Merchandising and creating new displays. I’m an aesthetics girl. I love making things look inviting, welcoming and pretty."

To stay successful takes a particular passion, she said. She credits her hard work ethic and perfectionism to keeping her store on track. "I don’t take/give anything but the best," she said.

She's also learned to be adaptable when it comes to the ebb and flow of the business. At the moment, she's busy thinking of new ventures and intends to do more with younger girls in the community.

"I’ve never had a ton of time to focus on interns and it’s definitely something that’s in the works," she said. "Plus, my mind is always turning with bigger and better ideas."
