Gillibrand Sees Growth Ahead For Poughkeepsie Microgreens Business

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Kirsten Gillibrand was so impressed with what the folks do at Indoor Organic Gardens of Poughkeepsie, that she said she would like to help the purveyors of vitamin-packed microgreens grow their business, according to a report by The Poughkeepsie Journal.

IOGOPK, as the farm operated out of a former five-and-dime store on the city’s main street is called, took the U.S. senator on a tour recently, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported.

When the Democrat was in the U.S. House from 2007-2009, she represented New York’s 20th congressional district and served on its Committee on Agriculture, including its subcommittee on horticulture and organic agriculture.

Gillibrand told The Poughkeepsie Journal that she would like to help the farm get a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture so it could expand and serve as a model for similar operations around New York state.

According to the farm’s website, its produce is “100 percent certified organic, and “non-GMO.” That means no pesticides or fertilizers are used.

Owner Brud Hodgkins told The Poughkeepsie Journal that the greens, which take about a week to grow, are sold to specialty food markets and restaurants and distributed at city schools.
