Tsunami Alerts Issued For US West Coast, Hawaii, Japan After 8.8 Quake Near Russia A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula triggered widespread tsunami alerts across the Pacific, including the entire U.S. West Coast, late Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake struck at 7:24 p.m. local time about 315 miles southwest of Bering Island, at a depth of 46 miles, and is among the top six strongest ever recorded, USGS officials confirmed. Fire Destroys Elmont Senior Center: Nassau County Arson Bomb Squad A fire destroyed an abandoned senior center on Foster Meadow Lane in Elmont early Saturday, Dec. 14, police announced. Officers and firefighters responded to a blaze at 1888 Foster Meadow Lane at 12:01 a.m., according to the Nassau County Arson Bomb Squad. The structure was fully engulfed when firefighters from Elmont and multiple surrounding departments arrived, investigators said. The Nassau County Fire Marshal and the Arson Bomb Squad were called to the scene as crews worked to extinguish the flames. Drunk 21-Year-Old Crashes Into Vacant Business In Nassau County, Police Say A 21-year-old man was hospitalized following a suspected drunk-driving crash into a vacant business on Long Island. The early-morning incident happened in Westbury, on Old Country Road near Carman Avenue, at around 2:40 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15. Nassau County Police said Aidan Schwartz, of Wantagh, was driving a Honda sedan when he crashed into a vacant building at 1137 Old Country Road. The building formerly housed a Pet Supplies Plus and Taco Joe’s. Officers removed Schwartz from the vehicle, and he was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
