Fire Forces People To Jump From Windows At Westchester Apartment Building An overnight fire at a Westchester apartment building forced people to jump from windows in an effort to escape the blaze, fire officials said.  The fire happened on Monday night, April 17 in White Plains at an apartment building located at 11 Lake St., according to White Plains Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 274.  The blaze broke out on the second floor of the 7-story H-shaped building and eventually spread to the fifth floor.  Responding firefighters were faced with heavy fire conditions upon arriving at the scene and had to help multiple residents jump from windows in order to ge…

Former Fire Chief, Air Force Vet From Northern Westchester Dies A former fire chief and lifelong Northern Westchester resident who dedicated much of his life to firefighting has died.  Yorktown Heights resident Arthur Orneck, who served as the Chief of the Yorktown Heights Volunteer Fire Department between 1986 and 1987, died on Tuesday, April 4 at the age of 74, according to his obituary.   Born in White Plains in 1948, Orneck lived his entire life in Yorktown Heights and worked as a professional firefighter for the Greenville Fire District in Scarsdale for 20 years before retiring in 2000.  Additionally, he was also a 58-year…

Westchester Man, Partner Sentenced For Roles In $1M Ponzi Scheme A Westchester County man and his business partner have been sentenced for their roles in a nearly decade-long $1-million Ponzi scheme. White Plains resident James Doyle, age 74, and Carl Carro, age 61, of Walton, Delaware, were convicted of defrauding investors in New York and throughout the nation. On Thursday, Jan. 12, Carro was sentenced to four to eight years in prison, and Doyle was sentenced to five years probation, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced.
