De Blasio, Gillibrand Could Get Cut From Fall Debates Amid Tougher Requirements
U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio are among about a dozen presidential candidates at risk of being bumped from a third round of debates in September. However, most of the 20 candidates who appeared in last week's Miami debates are expected to make the cut for a pair of CNN debates in Detroit on July 30 and 31. Because the July qualification rules are the same as June's, debate-watchers can expect the field of candidates who made last week's cut to be roughly the same later this month, according to media reports. The Democratic National Committee announced the names of presidential candidates who qualified for the first debates of the 2020 campaign, cutting the record wide field of 23 contenders down to the 20 spots.
