A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for parts of the area. The warning, which went into effect at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 8, covers most of Rockland County and parts of Northern Bergen County. (Areas in red in the image above from the National Weather Service.) At 2:58 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Ramsey, New Jersey, moving northeast at 10 miles per hour. Gruesome Injuries Suffered By Rockland Man Knocked Over Route 17 Median
A man from Rockland County who was struck trying to cross a stretch of Route 17 suffered a gruesome fate, responders revealed. Both his lower left leg and part of his right foot were amputated after he was knocked over the highway divider, they said. A longtime educator in the Hudson Valley announced that he will be retiring after serving decades helping students in Westchester. Bronxville Schools Superintendent Roy Montesano announced that he will be retiring, effective as of Jan. 1, 2023 after five years at the district, prompting an extensive nationwide search for his successor. A Rockland driver who sped off from police on northbound Route 17 in Ramsey, New Jersey following an incident with his ex-wife was captured by New York State Police 40 or so miles up the road, authorities said. Haverstraw police had issued a “stop and hold” on Richard Fernandez, age 37, of Pomona, who they said had driven to his ex-wife’s job and spilled coffee on her. A Zagat-rated Rockland County restaurant closed after 13 years, citing the economic pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic. "Thank you for an amazing 13 years," wrote the owners of Velo Bistro and Wine Bar in Nyack on their Instagram page. "We are heartbroken to have to close our doors due to the pandemic. CityMD has changed its messaging after telling 15,000 New York and New Jersey patients who tested positive for coronavirus antibodies that they were immune to the virus. Firefighters battled a Monday afternoon blaze fueled by a propane tank in the rear of a Mahwah home at the New York border. The fire was reported around 3:20 p.m. on Doremus Road in Mahwah just off East Crescent Avenue (which becomes Church Road in NY), barely 500 yards from the Airmont line. New York State Police investigators have issued an alert for a man who was busted stealing hundreds of dollars from several CVS locations in the area. Ramel Berry is wanted by State Police in Monroe for a charge of criminal possession of a controlled substance after he was stopped for a traffic law violation that led to a search of his vehicle. Traffic Jam, Power Outage: SUV Slams Into Route 17 Utility Pole In Ramsey
A driver was hospitalized with a head injury after his SUV slammed into a utility pole early Friday evening on Route 17 in Ramsey. Downed power lines fell in front of and behind a Federal Express tractor-trailer, further thickening area traffic near Spring Street and knocking out power to some area customers. Police from several Northwest Bergen towns thwarted a potentially dangerous incident Wednesday when they closed off a stretch of northbound Route 17 to stop a heroin-addled driver from Rockland whose car bounced off the center divider several times, authorities said. Tractor-Trailer Tips On Southbound Route 17 Ramp In Mahwah
MAHWAH, N.J. -- A tractor-trailer tipped on a southbound Route 17 exit ramp in Mahwah near the Ramsey border Saturday morning, tying up traffic and bringing a large emergency response. Township police, firefighters and EMS responded along with the New Jersey DOT, a wrecker and other towing rigs after the mid-morning crash at the Island Road ramp. There was no immediate word on injuries. Only a basic life support ambulance was summoned. At one point, two lanes were closed as a crew cleaned up the roadway. Northbound traffic was moving steadily.

RAMSEY, N.J. -- A MISSING 71-year-old Ramsey woman with Alzheimer's who went missing from a local shopping center early Wednesday evening was found a couple of hours later, authorities said. An NJ State Police helicopter was en route when Selma Rowe was found in Finch Park. She'd been reported missing from the Interstate Shopping Center off southbound Route 17 and Franklin Turnpike -- which has a Shop-Rite, Bed Bath & Beyond and DSW, among other stores -- a couple of blocks from the park.

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J. -- A raging fire that reduced a vacant Upper Saddle River home to rubble wasn't considered suspicious, authorities said. RAMSEY, N.J. -- A 24-year-old Ramsey man died Monday after drinking a toxic cocktail made from mixing a chemical used in airbags with water.
