Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Make $40,000 Heroin Bust
Palisades Interstate Parkway police seized $40,000 worth of heroin and arrested two people – one of them from Orange County -- after stopping a minivan on the parkway, authorities said.
PIP Police Officer Matthew Levine stopped the Honda Odyssey for a traffic violation in Alpine on Dec. 15, Lt. Jock H. Watkins, Jr. said Friday.
A probable-cause search turned up 4,000 wax folds of heroin, Watkins said.

Rats have gone from lurking in the shadows to literally taking over some streets in New York City, according to a new report.
The New York Times reported on Wednesday, May 22 that rat sightings are up 38 percent from 2014, citing data from OpenTheBooks.com. There were 12,617 sightings reported in 2014, a number which has jumped to 17,353 just four years later.
According to the report, in that same time period, during that time frame, the number of time city health inspectors found active signs of rat activities has nearly doubled.

John Gerard Taaffe, 79, died Sunday, April 28 at the UC San Diego Medical Center after a year-long battle with cancer.
John leaves his wife of 55 years, Shirley, his daughters Lisa and Jeannine, sons-in-law Elliot Levin and Kent Jensen, his grandson Seth and his three siblings Rosemarie, Patrick and Thomas. He joins his late son Sean in heaven where they are sure to be eating cheesesteaks and rooting for the Eagles, Phillies and Flyers.

Sister Frances Mary Horan, missioner to Panama, died on March 1, at the Maryknoll Sisters Center, in Maryknoll.
She was born in Philadelphia on April 8, 1924, to Isabelle A. (Hart) Horan and Daniel A. Horan. She was baptized Frances Mary at St. John the Baptist Church, in Philadelphia. She had two sisters, Marie and Anna and seven brothers: Robert, William, Eugene, Daniel, James, Frances and Joseph. Her parents and all of her siblings have predeceased her.
