Man Caught After Starting Outdoor Fire On Island In Hudson Valley During Burn Ban: Police
A man was apprehended after starting a blaze on an island in a Hudson Valley lake and not putting it out despite numerous orders from authorities, police said. The arrest resulted from an incident in Putnam County on Friday, Nov. 1 at around 6 p.m., when residents reported an open burn on Teakettle Spout Lake in Mahopac, according to the town's police department. Arriving officers found a man identified as Steven Turnbull "engaged in unauthorized outdoor burning" on a small island in the center of the lake, according to police. Multiple Departments Respond To Report Of Smoke At Hudson Valley Strip Mall
A report of a possible blaze at a Hudson Valley strip mall sent numerous police and fire departments to make sure the building was safe. On Monday, Nov. 28, police and firefighters responded to reports of possible smoke coming from a multi-store strip in Mahopac at 900 South Lake Blvd., according to Mahopac Falls Fire Department spokesman Jack Casey. Man Dies After Rescuing Grandchildren In Area House Fire, Police Say
An area grandfather died after saving his two grandchildren from a fire that destroyed a Hudson Valley home. The fire broke out in Putnam County around 10 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, at a home on Scarsdale Road in Lake Carmel, a hamlet in the town of Kent. Arriving firefighters and police found two small children outside the burning building, said the Kent Police Department. An area man who fled from police during a routine traffic stop causing a school lockdown was captured after a chase. The 20-year-old unidentified Dutchess County man from Pawling was arrested on Tuesday, Nov. 9, following the stop by Carmel Police in Putnam County. One driver was hospitalized, while a second refused medical attention following a two-car crash outside a popular area restaurant, officials said. First responders in Putnam County were dispatched at approximately 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 20 to a reported two-car crash in front of the Countryside Kitchen Restaurant on Route 6 in Mahopac. A late-afternoon, two-alarm house fire broke out on the third story of a residence in the area. It happened just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 in Mahopac on Nicole Way. Lightning Strike Hospitalizes Three In Area
A lightning strike on Lake Mahopac sent three people out boating to the hospital and slightly injured another. The incident took place around 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 4 when Putnam County Sheriff's Sgt. Matthew Monroe of the department's Marine Patrol Unit responded to a report of an occupied disabled boat on Lake Mahopac, the department said. During heavy rain and frequent lightning strikes Monroe was able to locate the disabled vessel, near the northwest corner of the lake. Mahopac Brush Fire Sandwiched On Tree Line Threatens Home
Mahopac firefighters spent several hours battling a fire located behind a home on Shinaya Court located near a heavily wooded tree line. The call for the fire came in around 3 p.m. Wednesday with the department responding within minutes, Chief Bill Nikisher was quick to call for reinforcements.
