As Labor Day weekend approaches, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is urging residents to take precautions against mosquito bites to protect themselves against illnesses, including one that killed a 41-year-old man in the Northeast. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is urging residents to stay safe and hydrated as hot, humid air rolls into much of the state ahead of severe storms predicted to bring heavy rains and flash flooding. In an announcement on Monday, July 8, Hochul warned that above-average temperatures and high humidity would arrive in the state in the next few days. A new nationwide health advisory has been issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as cases of potentially fatal flesh-eating bacteria continue to climb. Vibrio vulnificus infections have killed at least 13 people on the Eastern Seaboard this year and cause an estimated 80,000 illnesses annually in the United States. A round of heavy thunderstorms will sweep through the region bringing some relief from the hot and sticky stretch of days by ushering in a more comfortable air mass from Canada.
