A jury announced that Wallkill resident Jamaad Murphy, 26, was found not guilty of murder, manslaughter, assault and criminal possession of a weapon after two days of deliberation following a weeklong trial.
On May 9, 2015, 16-year-old Terence West, Jr. was lured outside the Lake Street Apartments in Newburgh by a text message. Once outside, he was shot in the leg and torso and transported to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, where he died from those injuries. Murphy was later arrested and charged as investigators gathered evidence.
According to a recordonline.com report, Murphy was arrested last spring when one of West’s friends proclaimed that Murphy was the assailant. No weapon was ever recovered. When the verdict was read, Murphy reportedly stood still and hugged his lawyer while his family quickly left the courthouse.
