Man Charged With Firing Semiautomatic Gun Near Homes In Newburgh

An Orange County man was arrested for firing a semiautomatic gun near homes and for fleeing from police.

Jawkaan Kenney, 33, of Newburgh was arrested after the City of Newburgh Police Department received several calls about a person shooting in the area of Carson Avenue and South Lander Street around 1:20 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 19, said Det. Lt. Joseph Burns. 

The police department also received a Shot Spotter activation, which indicates that shots have been fired.

Officers responded to the area and were told that a caller had seen Kenney in the backyards between Overlook Place & Carson Avenue. Officers tracked Kenney down, and after being told to stop, he attempted to flee, but was captured after a short foot chase, Burns said.

A black semi-automatic handgun near Kenney, who was charged with reckless endangering and criminal possession of a weapon.
