The Albany-area athlete, a member of the Capital Region Sliders Volleyball Club, was playing in the Boston Volleyball Festival when he collapsed inside the Boston Convention Center on Friday night, Feb. 21, as Daily Voice reported.
In an update Friday, Feb. 28, family friend Odette Fung announced that the boy had died.
“On behalf of the family, it is with the heaviest of hearts that I inform you that their son is with God,” Fung wrote on a GoFundMe campaign. “With or without knowing you, the family felt your love and support. Without being near you, they heard all of your thoughts and prayers.”
The boy’s age, hometown, and contributing health factors, if any, were not immediately available.
“We recognize the impact such incidents have on the entire volleyball community, and we remain committed to providing any necessary assistance and resources at this time,” AJ Joseph, president of the Boston Volleyball Tournament, told Boston station WCVB.
Fung described the teen and his family as “loving and hardworking,” adding that the entire family shares a love for volleyball.
“I know that if another family were in a similar situation, they would be one of the first to find out how they can help,” she said. “If you are a volleyball parent, a volleyball player, or just a person who wants to help this family, I am asking for your generosity,” Fund continued, adding that all money raised will help cover mounting medical bills and other expenses.
The campaign had raised over $78,000 as of Friday, March 7. Those who wish to donate can do so via GoFundMe.
Additional details about the boy's life were not immediately available. Loved ones are invited to share a statement, funeral details, and/or photos by emailing mmashburn@dailyvoice.com.
