In accordance with the Gentile family’s wishes, the funeral procession will pass through Westlake High School and Middle School sometime before noon on Thursday, the Mount Pleasant Central School District announced earlier this week.

Students, faculty, and staff—led by the Westlake Student Council—will gather in front of the high school to honor Gia, who died on Sunday, March 9, following a brave battle with neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. Details on how Westlake Middle School students may participate will be shared separately.

All Mount Pleasant Central School District facilities will also fly flags at half-staff on Thursday in Gia’s honor, district officials said.

Gia’s death has left a profound impact on her family, friends, classmates, and the broader community.

Her father, Carmine Gentile, a member of the Harrison Police Department, shared the incredible strength and resilience Gia demonstrated throughout her life, including her courageous fight agianst neuroblastoma.

Gia was diagnosed at just six years old after suffering from persistent pain in her leg, back, and shoulder. Her illness quickly turned her family's world upside down, but through it all, her spirit remained unwavering.

In a heartfelt message, Carmine Gentile credited the Harrison PBA for its generosity and support, which allowed him to be by Gia’s side during every treatment, every doctor’s visit, and every difficult moment. Members of the PBA donated their own vacation and personal days, ensuring that Gia’s father could remain present throughout her fight.

A Scholarship to Continue Gia’s Kindness

Gia was known for her selflessness, kindness, and determination to help others, her family said. In her memory, the Gentile family has launched a scholarship initiative to encourage acts of kindness and community service.

The "Gia’s Kindness Week" initiative, led by her sister Jordana, will invite Westlake students to participate in acts of compassion, inclusivity, and service, culminating in the awarding of a scholarship to a high school student who exemplifies Gia’s values.

A second annual scholarship will be awarded to a Westlake Varsity Cheerleading Team member—where Gia’s passion for cheer shined brightly.

Those who wish to donate toward the scholarship fund can do so via a GoFundMe page set up by Gia's family earlier this week. As of Wednesday morning, March 12, the effort had already collected a stunning $182,000 in donations, far surpassing the original $50,000 goal.

If you wish to donate, you can do so by clicking here.

Gia’s wake will take place at Hawthorne Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 12, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral mass will follow at Holy Name of Jesus in Valhalla on Thursday, March 13, at 10 a.m.

The Gentile family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Gia’s Kindness Scholarship Fund, aimed at keeping her legacy of love and compassion alive.
