Children can safely return to classrooms in most communities throughout the nation if proper safety measures are taken amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) announced, saying evidence indicates that in-person instruction can be held safely as long as social distancing and mask-wearing protocols are in place. 19: Area School District Closes For In-Person Learning Until 2021
A new school district in the area has announced it will close for in-person learning for several weeks due to COVID-19 exposure. Public schools in the Pearl River District in Rockland County will switch to distance learning beginning Monday, Dec. 14, and lasting until Monday, Jan. 11. 19: Rockland School Testing Sites Announced
The Rockland County Department of Health has partnered with Good Samaritan Hospital to provide one week of COVID-19 testing for school districts within the county's Yellow Zone. The period begins Monday, Nov. 30. Schools within the Yellow Zone are required to test 20 percent of students, faculty, and staff over the two-week period immediately following the announcement of a Yellow Zone designation in order to stay open for in-person instruction. 19: State Guidelines For Reopening Schools Now Available To Public
Guidelines sent to school districts when the formula that will be used to reopen schools across New York State was announced are now available for the general public. Under the formula, schools can reopen if the region is in Phase 4 and the daily COVID-19 infection rate is five percent or lower over a 14-day average. But if the regional infection rate is greater than nine percent using a seven-day average after Saturday, Aug. 1, schools will then have to close, in effect, "an emergency stop button," Gov.
